It is actually a difficult question, as to choose only one, but i can say it is Zdzislaw Beksinski.
Zdzislaw Beksinski (1929-2005) was a Polish painter, worked in variety of media: photography, and drawing initially, then in sculpture and computer graphics. Beksinski was born on 24th February 1929 in Sanok, Poland, and died on 22th February 2005 in Warsaw. In 1952 he graduated in architecture at Cracow University of Technology, and later on he worked for several years as a stylist in the design studio 'Autosan' in Sanok, founded by his ancestor Mateusz Beksinski. However his life and his work was fated for scarify as in 1999 his son, Dawid committed suicide and his wife Zofia died after a serious illness. In this case I believe that a#his work was also a kind of escaping of real world into abstraction. He also admitted it as he never gave titles of his paintings, as he regarded it as his subjective vision of the world. I'm not only fascinated of his work, but also in his person. Beksinski was completely honest in his work. He never tried or attempt giving the answer to the riddles posed in his work. So I believe everyone has chance to find themselves in his work. For me, however in any case with this images do not show that life is horrible, and devoid of hope. It follows that,although dangerous, is thrilling and full of dignity.
I found him as a great artist who is not afraid of using different materials and media. He tried to receive the world in all possible ways, and even the role of camera had significant part in his life and was described by him as a diary, where he recorded 'everything what moves'.
His photographs are disturbing, presenting human figures, often in anguished poses, curled up as if afraid of something and models were sometimes wrapped with string, sadistically deforming them. He was taking beautiful aesthetic pictures, which yet were brutal.
Now, after a years of development of his work, which was tragically closed few years ago by a sudden death, I look at all his work in retrospect, trying to enter into the personality of the creator, to try to better understand his work and his attitude to life.
