Sam Taylor-Wood

List two specific key relationships between Sam Taylor Wood's photography and film work? Both photography and film of Sam Taylor Wood, are quite personal, they reflects her feelings as she was passing through some tough moments of her life. It is also important that both of them consists of people and human emotions. Another interesting issue is that Taylor-Wood started as a sculptor, and as she couldn't completely freely express herself through it, she decided to try with different media- film and photography.

How does the use of multi-screen installation in her work reflect narrative?

The use of multi-screen installations allows her to show high emotions, and decadences. And it is made in the way that viewer as  is ‘confused’ of all stories around is able to make his own story, and allows viewer to free his creativity.

Bill Viola

Bill Viola, born in 1951 he pioneered, as an established of video as a form of contemporary art. Throughout his career he has created videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces, and tv broadcasts.

Personally I find his work very inspiring, especially because of the characteristics he uses. The main themes of his work are water, light and time, where the image is concern at people, giving those spiritual and mystic feeling, surrounded with very intimate
feelings of emotions.

Salvador Dali

Surrealism and cinema

Salvador Dali was collaborated to few films, before starting his own activity. He was helping other artists with scripts, and constructing the scenery. He was very active in the front of and behind the scenes of moving image world. Alhough as it went more into art field, he created some pieces on which he collaborated with Walt Disney of art such as ‘Destino’.

Although Dali was mostly collaborating with other artist, I believe he is worth entioning, because as we look at those moving image examples, we are able to see his great impact in his work, and his personal style.  As when he was credited as co-creator of ‘Un Chien ANdalou’ along with Luis Bunuel. This film was his way of creating some dreamlike qualities of surrounding us world.

Alicja Zebrowska


Alicja Zebrowska is a polish contemporary video artists. In her work she extensively explores the realm of taboo covered areas, the overlooked and subcutaneous ones. Contact to her work precipitates of the automatism view, condemning the viewer on their own helplessness. Zebrowska's work penetrates the imagination and altered states of concious. Unfortunatelly I was only able to see one of her films on exhibition, called 'Death of a collector of butterflies' from 2008. The video remind me of exploration, with this great impression of tension and dramatic moment, especially as the 'collector' became a victim.




Show an example of a specific gallery space or a site specific location where a video artist or film maker has created work specifically for that space and been influenced by it.

Exhibition of Salvador Dali works in Tate Modern in London. It was very exciting exhibition, as you were walking around and exploring his work hanged at walls, and then you had to go to this small viewing rooms, which were completely different to the rest of space. Dark. Quiet. Not that crowded. And it felt like a journey of exploration, where as the tired explorer, you were resting in this separated zone, where no one and nothing was disturbing your reflections.
