What is the role of the cinematographer in film making?
The cinematographer work is to be in charge of filming, camera, lights, and ensure that the viewers' attetntion is directed at the key elements of the movie. So actually his role is to manipulate audience, so they see what he wants them to see.
Why did director Roman Polanski insist on using hand held camera in the film Chinatown?
It was Polanski's way to create this integration with audience, that they would feel like participating in the story themsleves. The hand held camera was used to get very intimate and spontaneous feel to the scenes, and actually encourage actors to act spontaneous and natural.
Name films which use colour in a very symbolic way, and describe what they suggest.
Andriej Tarkowski 'Stalker'
What is most conspicuous about this movie is colour. The world outside 'Zona' was presented in sepia. And accrording to the story 'Zona' was a place created after the fall of the meteorite, surrounded by a cordon of police. Tarkowski new exactly how to operate the colours, so it wasn't unreasonable decision to change colour of black and white tape on brown colour. As he studied painting and western medieval, Renaissance and Baroque he knew the symblism of colours. And according to religious and philosophical messages bronze is vanity, boredom, futility and resignation. This is the way Stalker sees the world he lives in. Also the brown colour is seen in the symbols of the earth (power, knowledge, wealt, etc) all drowned. Later in the movie we are able to see sunken fragment of Eyck image, showing that for whom he probably considered Stalker- John Baptist- 'the angel of the desert'. This is very symbolic as the Zona is the empty place 'no one is there and cannot exist'.
The movie has its metaphorical meaning, and if we take into account the year and place of the film (USSR 1979) seal/bistre colour was actually accorded to Soviet reality, and the cordon surrounding the Zona is omnipresent censorhip and surveillance time. Zona is shown in colour as as the idea of an immaterial (that she is created by all the minds inside her), a metaphor for life, faith, and the road of self discovery, however is full of pitfalls. The symbol of colour goes beyond the worthless, material reality.

Although the exception to this rule is use of colour in the last scene, the only person outside of Zona, who was presented in colour and also the only person in the whole film, whose name was mentioned in the daughter of stalker. Her grief, her tragedy is precisely in the fact that she understends everything
other films where symbolism of colour is important:
'The last Emperor'
yellow-colour of emperors, power, sky, sun
red- colour of Peking, forbidden city
green- knowledge, forbidden information in the closed, self contained city
orange-symbol of family
