Where do we draw the line when stealing someone's idea?
Ori Gersht born in 196 in Tel Aviv in Israel, is a great photographer and his practice as a photographer is cencerned with history and metaphor, journeys and geographical place twisted with metaphysical space. It is also interesting as he investigates the relationships between photography, technology and optical perception. I came across him looking at Juan Sanchez Cotan's work.
"Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber" by Cotan VS "Still" by Ori Gersht
Photo 'Still' is a snapshoot of the film 'Pomegranate' founded in 2007. Its composition and colours reflect the positions of objects on a painting 'Still life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber' by Juan Sanchez Cotan. But in the fact the work of Gersht doesn't want to be a merely a repetition or either a copy of the painting, so he shows some differences, using slightly different vegetables and fruit and the angle we view it,along with the shadow play, uniformity and flatness of the black background. And most important, the configuration of fruit and vegetables in his work falls apart when one of fruits is thorn by shot from the gun. This film start with awaiting for something almost like calm before the storm, but refeing to the Cotan work it is an actual step further. In painting the darkness is so deep almost like it would be coming to 'steal' those vegetables, and even we would stare for hours at it nothing would happen although we have the feeling that the darkness is closer and closer to us, so Gersht's work is challenging the painting with the symbol of violence, and disorder and dramatic change.
